Maria Alvarez received a series of subprime mortgage loans in 2006 and 2007. She was duped by a Spanish-speaking mortgage broker who convinced a parade of monolingual Spanish speakers like her to take out high-risk loans with monthly payments far above the borrowers’ monthly incomes. The broker and loan originators made tens of thousands of dollars when these loans closed.
